Haroun N. Shah
Professor Shah held senior academic appointments at the University of London for 25 years with intermittent periods (2-3 years) in Canada and the Middle East. In 1997, he took up his first appointment outside university as Head of Molecular Identification Services, Public Health England (now UK Health Security Agency) to initiate a new laboratory with a remit to study and intercept the threat of emerging, atypical, and rarely isolated human infectious disease agents into the UK. He established a national service for the diagnosis of human pathogens which is still functioning today while also building a vibrant research team to develop supporting technologies, the most promising line to emerge being new forms of Mass Spectrometry and Rapid Tandem MS/MS Proteome Analysis. His publication: “The Application of MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry to Profile the Surface of Intact Bacterial Cells.” (Shah et al, 2000) would lead to a new epoch of microbial diagnostics and by 2004, he reported the first comprehensive database as a proof-of-concept paper titled ‘Compilation of a MALDI-TOF Mass Spectral database for the rapid screening and characterisation of bacteria implicated in human infectious diseases.’ Infection, Genetics and Evolution, 2004; 4: 221-242. He has pioneered the development of nanotechnologies, using cutting-edge platforms based upon genes (Genomics) and the chemistry of proteins (Proteomics), and from 1998 began hosting annual international conferences to promote R&D in the field. Professor Shah helped to start several journals, such as “Anaerobe” and edited 4 journals for over 25 years and was the Editor-in-chief for the journal “Enzymology and Proteomics” for 10 years. In addition, he has been the Editor of several books.
III. Description of the curricular activity
The Course Unit "Scientific Writing and Communication in English" is a postgraduate training course that addresses the development of writing in science, being taught 100% in English. In this Course Unit, the student’s ability to develop scientific texts coherently in a friendly and interactive manner will be enhanced. Conditions for students to communicate scientifically and autonomously will be created. The theme is transversal and contributes to all research lines of the Doctoral Programme in Science of Natural Resources (Universidad de La Frontera-UFRO, Temuco, Chile) and Postgraduate Programme in Biotechnology (Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná-UTFPR, Ponta Grossa, PR, Brazil). It also contributes to increasing productivity through the writing and publication of experimental research and the review of scientific literature in its research proposal in the manner declared by the Postgraduate Programmes involved in the course organisation.
